The 2012 horse racing season is almost at a close here in Minnesota. On Friday night, my girlfriend and I went to the track to test our horse picking skills. We don’t usually go to night sessions, which run from 7pm to 10:45 pm, but decided to see what it was like under the lights. The weather was great, so that was a plus, although I was getting tired toward the end. It took a few races to get our mojo working. On the 3rd race we both picked the same exacta combo and each won $110 on our $5 bets. I then won my next three exacta wagers, bringing my total for the night to $240. My girlfriend also did well, winning a trifecta and a rare superfecta wager, giving her a similar winning total for the evening. I was happy to come out ahead, making up for several previous sessions that had not gone as well. My tip for this week is don’t get buried in too much handicapping data. Find what is most important to you and use that to make your picks. Anything can happen and usually does. During the last race, the favorite stumbled out of the gate. He managed to come from last to finish second, but it still ruined many wagers, mine included. We are planning one last visit to our local track before the season ends. Wish us luck!
