This is the first year that I placed a future wager on the Kentucky Derby using my TVG/FanDuel account. I have the following win wagers:
- Pool #4 – $2 Win on Fierceness ($34)
- Pool #5 – $2 Win on Dornoch ($28)
- Pool #6 – $2 Win on Catching Freedom ($18)
To find out what the payouts will be I had to go to Kentucky Derby Future Wager | Kentucky Derby to see the results of the pools. Initially, you can see the odds for each horse, but that changes after each pool closes. Pool 4 closed on 2/18/2024 and had a total of $309,393 wagered across 40 horses. Fierceness ended up with odds of 16-1 for a payoff of $34 if he wins. In Pool 5, Dornoch ended up with odds of 13-1 for a payoff of $28. Fierceness’s odds dropped to 9-1 for wagers in pool 5. Pool 6 closed on April 6th and Catching Freedom ended up with odds of 8-1 for a payoff of $18. In the 6th pool Fierceness went down to 2-1 and Dornoch was 12-1. Since these are win bets, I can only get one payout, so I will be rooting for Fierceness to win.
The last Derby qualifying race finished on 4/13/24. Here are the top 10 horses and trainers by points. You can see the complete list HERE:
- SIERRA LEONE (Chad Brown) – 155
- FIERCENESS (Todd Pletcher) – 136
- CATCHING FREEDOM (Brad Cox) – 125
- STRONGHOLD (Phil D’Amato) – 125
- RESILIENCE (Bill Mott) – 110
- FOREVER YOUNG (JPN) (Yoshito Yahagi) – 100
- ENDLESSLY (Michael McCarthy) – 100
- DORNOCH (Danny Gargan) – 75
- JUST A TOUCH (Brad Cox) – 75
- TRACK PHANTOM (Steve Asmussen) – 70
Now we have to wait for jockey selections and the gate draw. It looks like Sierra Leone will be the favorite at this point. Chad Brown’s other entry is Domestic Product. With no Baffert horses in the race this year, the winner will most likely be trained by Chad Brown, Todd Pletcher, or Brad Cox.
