1/St Bet is a horse wagering website and app similar to TVG, Twin Spires, Express Bet, and NYRA Bets. It is the official app of Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita, Maryland Jockey Club, Golden Gate Fields, and Canterbury Park. If you live near one of these tracks, you are probably familiar with the app. 1/St Bet’s handicapping tool analyzes more than 50 data points for every race, including speed, pace, class, jockey, trainer and pedigree, to identify factors that winners have shared in past races. You can either use the default factors or create your own and apply them to a race.
The factors are in 4 general categories: Performance, Results, Jockey/ Trainer, and Pedigree. The Top (default) factors are based on how much data is available and can vary from race to race. You can create up to 5 custom factor sets by going into “More” and selecting “Favorite Factors”. This is useful if you want to create a set of factors for a certain type of race. While in a race screen, you select “Handicap” to apply a set of factors. If you want to apply a different set of factors, you need to go back into “Handicap”, select “Clear All”, and “Apply”. Going back into the “Handicap” section shows you circled factors indicating that they were the factors used.
You can also make adjustments to applied factors in the “Handicap” section. Just deselect a circled factor and pick a different one, then select “Apply”. Factors like Speed, Earnings, and Results are not going to apply to Maiden races. In that case, you would need to focus on Jockey and Trainer factors. In races where favorites are most likely to win, the factor system works well. But, in races that are more open, the factor system may not be able to determine the winner. It is even more difficult to find a winning trifecta using the win/place/show percentages that the factor system generates.
I made a list of the factors and created a custom set to experiment with. I like the large number of factors available, but there is a chance that you could select factors with little or no data. I also discovered that factor handicapping isn’t available at some of the tracks on 1/St Bet. Each wagering app has its own set of handicapping tools. I would rate this one a “C+” for allowing customization and having an easy to apply set of top factors for beginners. But you may want to use other methods if you want to find longshots.
