Another Kentucky Derby, another wagering disappointment. Congratulations if you picked Medina Spirit to win the race. Like most who follow horse racing, I had dismissed Baffert’s chances to win the derby this year. Medina Spirit was his 4th string runner. This made it hard to bet on the horse, considering the other more accomplished entries in the race. What we all overlooked is the formula Baffert + Velazquez = winner. What makes it extra disappointing is getting the first half of the Derby Double wager, with 3 chances to win, and you don’t have the #8. I needed Known Agenda, Hot Rod Charlie, or Rock Your World. I also had a trifecta wheel bet with Essential Quality and Rock Your World on top and that didn’t pan out either. In the end I didn’t win any money on this year’s derby. I did get some of my money back the next day when I hit a trifecta for $33 on race 8 at Belmont Park. Most of the time, you can’t go wrong with Joel Rosario and the Ortiz brothers. Irad Ortiz is overdue for a derby win. Next up is the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, May 15 at Pimlico. By the way, Baffert trained horses have won the Preakness 7 times. He is tied for the most wins by a trainer in that race. If Medina Spirit runs in the race, he will not be anywhere near the 12/1 odds he was in the derby.
