Eight days into Canterbury Park’s 2024 season, I finally made it to the track to see some live horse races. The property has changed a lot with so many new construction projects around the track. I bought my tickets online the day of the race for $10 each (instead of $8 when you buy in advance). Luckily, I had a “buy one, get one free” coupon. Sunday June 9th was family day at the track and races started at 1PM instead of 5PM. The crowd was fairly thin for such a nice day. I’m sure the crowd was bigger the day before for the Belmont stakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was only the third time that I used the new betting machines and the 1\/ST Bet app for wagering. I still don’t care for it. Adding money to your account requires several card swipes and half the time the machine won’t recognize my Canterbury card. The app on my phone stayed connected during the session, but it disconnected several times, requiring a reboot on my partner’s phone. Placing wagers on the app is doable, but there is a lot of information on the screen that gets in the way. I am too used to the TVG app for online wagering, which I think is a superior product compared to 1\/ST Bet. Canterbury had quite a few tellers taking wagers on this day. Most likely because the online wagering is too complicated for the average customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I put in a few multi-race wagers but got knocked out right away. My most successful wager was the basic win bet. I was able to catch 2 longshots that returned about $20 each. The most memorable was in the 6th race. I saw that the #2 horse was the only grey in the 8-horse field, so I decided to put a $3 win bet on him. He was trained by McLean Robertson who is one of the best trainers at Canterbury. My horse was in last place at one point during the race, but in the stretch, the #4 horse who was in the lead, lost its rider Diego Sanchez. That slowed the pace up front just enough to allow the #4 horse to swing outside and pass the leaders. Sanchez was taken away by ambulance. His horse was uninjured, and I collected $21.30 for the win.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
