May 27th was opening day at Canterbury Park. The day prior, I had reserved 2 general admission tickets for $6 each. Normally they go for $8 each when you buy them online, but I used a 25% discount code. In past years they offered a 50% early discount. Tickets are normally $10 if you buy them at the track on race day, unless they are having a special event, or you want better seating. We arrived about an hour before the first race in order to get my partner setup to bet on her phone with the 1st Bet app. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was a nice day, so the crowd was a good size, but not so large that you couldn’t find a seat. It took them about 45 minutes to get the online betting sorted out. I’m not sure what the problem was, but they had to issue a new players card and basically start from scratch validating identity with driver’s license and social security number. This all started last year when they changed over to 1st Bet. My conversion was successful, but my partner’s card became locked during the online conversion process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was the first time using the new betting terminals. The screens are very busy with information which makes it difficult find what you are looking for. For example, to deposit or withdraw you have to select account settings down in the lower right corner. The terminal then needs your account number to complete the transaction. I didn’t know that you could re-swipe your card to give it the account number, so I was entering it manually. A lady next to us was trying to make a wager for the first time and was completely lost as to how to do it. We helped her out, but it was our first time too. The advantage we had was that we knew the abbreviations for the various bets you can make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As far as the racing, it went smoothly for opening day. We only stayed for the first 5 races, which had small fields made even smaller with scratches. I played an early pick 4 but lost the first race. The 5th race had a long shot that decided that this was a good day to run a 100-speed figure after averaging 60 in 3 previous races. We didn’t win any money, but it was good to see the horses and hear the crowd cheer when they crossed the finish line. There was one woman sitting behind us that was so loud that we had to move before the next race.
