For the 2022 racing season Canterbury Park in Minnesota announced that they had changed to 1st Bet as their official betting app. Previously, they used an onsite web portal called “BetCanterbury”. I liked using their web portal. You could wager on Canterbury or races at other tracks. The only thing it didn’t have was handicapping tools. I would do my handicapping before I went to the track, so that wasn’t a feature that I needed. The new app from 1st Bet was rolled out as part of an update to their wagering kiosks. Four other tracks currently use the 1st Bet app for on-site wagering (Santa Anita, Gulfstream Park, Laurel Park, and Golden Gate).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Canterbury transitioned all player accounts to 1st Bet and sent an email with instructions on how to activate the account. Late in the season I decided to see if I could get the app working on my mobile phone. At first, I had problems with getting my password reset. But after trying again a few days later, I was able to log into 1st Bet and have a look around. I am used to the TVG app, so it took a few sessions to get familiar with the app. There are two handicapping modes. One that uses pre-selected criteria to determine the top horses and another mode that lets you pick the top 10 criteria for the race. The number of handicapping options is long in the manual mode. I felt like it would take some real-world testing before I felt comfortable using the info to place a wager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I tried using the handicapping features of the app on some live races while at home. But I found myself using the handicapping info on the TVG app when it came to placing a wager. TVG gives you actual rating numbers from Equibase and 1st Bet only gives you a likely win percentage compared to the other horses in the race. Canterbury’s season ended in September, and I never got there to try the new app on a live race. Mainly because my girlfriend was unable to get her account activated. I also didn’t have any extra money this year and didn’t want to go to the track by myself.
