After my Santa Anita pick 4 win on Friday, I only put in a couple small wagers on Saturday. Oaklawn Park had a few stakes races including the grade 3 Whitmore stakes. I never seem to do well at Oaklawn, and Saturday was no exception. I decided to look for a pick 4 opportunity and decided to play the late pick 4 at Gulfstream Park on Sunday (3\/20\/22). The sequence had two 11 horse races with one being a maiden claiming race at the end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I handicapped the race and put in an $18 pick 4 ticket consisting of 3 horses in each of the first two races and 2 horses in each of the last two races. The first race had 7 horses, I thought 3 of them had a chance, but in the end the favorite Mr. Tito’s ridden by Julien Leparoux won at odds of 3\/2. The next race had 11 horses and I didn’t have New York Girl, the heavy favorite. I decided to go with 3 other horses that I felt had better stats. Good thing, because #7 Grand Ave Girl ended up winning the race at 11\/1. The 3rd race had 6 horses with Doc Amster as the odds-on favorite. I had that one and Absolute Grit ridden by Irad Ortiz. Absolute Grit ran well and easily won the 5-1\/2-furlong race at 2\/1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The last race had me worried because it was an 11-horse maiden race and I had only two horses picked to win. I had #4, Uncaptured Grace ridden by Hector Berrios, and #6 Sumting Right ridden by Irad Ortiz. In my view, these were the two fastest horses in the race. But the race was 8.5 furlongs and horses that get an early lead often get passed in the stretch. The pick 4 will pay showed #6 at $371 and the #4 at over twice that amount. When the race started #4 went right to the lead with #6 close behind. Hector was running a good race but ended up getting passed by Irad in the stretch. My two horses had finished 1st and 2nd giving me the $371 pick 4 win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
